Chinese President Xi Jin Ping said that the BRICS countries “had become an important force on the international stage” during a virtual conference of the group on Thursday, as he spoke from Beijing.
Xi commemorated the fifteenth anniversary of BRICS cooperation, complementing how the programme has improved ‘strategic communication’ and ‘political trust in the spirit of openness’ between the five countries, which include Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
Speaking on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Xi praised how the five member countries had maintained momentum and continued progress, stating that it proved ‘smooth, solid and sustained progress’ could be made when putting their minds together.
“Next year, China will take over as the chairman of BRICS, and we will host the fourteenth BRICS summit,” concluded Xi. “We look forward to working with our BRICS partners to deepen all areas of our cooperation, to build a closer and more resource-oriented partnership, to meet our common challenges and to create a better future.”
