The Sultan of Brunei Hassanal Bolkiah handed over the chairmanship to the Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Senm during the closing ceremony of the 38th and 39th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in Bandar Seri Begawan on Thursday.
The event took place virtually with the theme of “We Care, We Prepare, We Prosper” and was focused on the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic and promoting economic recovery.
Myanmar refused to send a civilian representative to this year’s summit after their top military general was barred from attending the event following the aftermath of the military coup in the Asian country.
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN consists of Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia. It was founded on 8 August 1967 in Bangkok.
