Incumbent Bulgarian President Rumen Radev, along with Vice President Iliana Iotova, spoke to press in Sofia on Sunday commenting on the early results of the presidential and parliamentary elections, the third ones held this year.
Radev was reported to have been ahead in the polls in the first round of the presidential elections, with university professor and GERB party candidate Anastas Gerdzhikov, and the newly formed anti-corruption party coming second, according to exit polls announced on Bulgarian National Television.
“It’s already clear there will be a second ballot. The current result gives us optimism, but it will be a mistake that we consider the victory to be pre-destined. On this second ballot, we will collide with the well-organised corporate vote of “Status quo”. And the only way to overcome its enormous resources, to beat the lies, manipulations and threats is to vote in mobilisation,” Radev said.
The incumbent president is running for a second five-year term with a run off scheduled for November 21.
Bulgaria is currently battling a surge in COVID-19 cases, high energy prices and corruption allegations. Voters expressed support for different political parties with a shared hope for a functioning government to battle the current health crisis.
