Several members of the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organisation (VMRO) protested outside Sofia’s Presidency building on Monday, in opposition to North Macedonia’s possible accession to the European Union.

Demonstrators raised banners and chanted ‘now and forever, Macedonia is Bulgarian,’ as President Rumen Radev assembled the National Security Council regarding the possible EU accession of North Macedonia and Albania.

“It is unacceptable that politicians who claim to defend the interests of the EU do not defend the interests of Macedonians with a Bulgarian mentality,” commented Angel Djambazki, EU deputy and vice president of VMRO.

Bulgaria continues to maintain its veto on North Macedonia’s EU accession.

When Bulgaria’s newly-formed coalition government declared that it would speed up the EU accession process, many patriots saw this as a sign that the country would back down from its hardliner position under pressure from Brussels.

Those opposed to North Macedonia joining the EU are planning to organise a referendum should the ruling parties back down on the veto.

SOUNDBITES:

SOT, Angel Djambazki, EU deputy and vice president of VMRO (Bulgarian): “It’s unacceptable that politicians who pretend to defend EU interests do not defend the interests of Macedonians with a Bulgarian mindset.”

SOT Angel Djambazki, EU deputy and vice president of VMRO (Bulgarian): “We appeal to you: do not betray the interest of the Bulgarians in Macedonia. We appeal to you: do not betray the memory of our forefathers.”

SOT, Vladimir Nikolov, Protester and member of VMRO (Bulgarian): “We expect from that council a clear position defending the Bulgarian national interest.”

SOT, Krasimir Karakachanov, President of VMRO (Bulgarian): “Do not submit to pressure from abroad and do not serve foreign interests. You will not be the first to be ready to sell Bulgaria, under that topic.”
