Burkina Faso: Army announces takeover on state television

Members of the Burkina Faso military announced on state TV in Ouagadougou on Monday that it had taken control of the West African country after detaining President Roch Kabore.

The soldiers said that a takeover had been carried out without violence and those detained were secure.

SOT, Sidsore Kader Ouedraogo, Army captain (French): “Communique number two. People of Burkina Faso. Fellow citizens, friends of Burkina Faso, due to the continuous deterioration of the security situation, which threatens the foundations of our nation, the visible inability of Mr. Roch Marc Christian Kabore to unite the Burkinabe to effectively face the situation, and following the exasperation of the various social levels of the nation, the Patriotic Movement for Safeguarding and Restoration (MPSR) has decided to take its responsibilities before history, the national and international communities. The movement, which brings together all the components of the defence and security forces, has decided to put an end to the power of Mr Roch Marc Christian Kabore on 24 January 2022.”

SOT, Sidsore Kader Ouedraogo, Army captain (French): “A decision taken with the only aim to allow our country to get on the right path again and to gather its strengths in order to fight for its territorial integrity, and its sovereignty. The MPSR wants to stress that all operation took place without bloodshed and without physical violence against the arrested people who are being held in a safe place, with respect for their dignity.”

SOT, Sidsore Kader Ouedraogo, Army captain (French): “The MPSR wants to reassure Burkina Faso’s partners and friends of the determination of our country to keep respecting its international commitments, particularly with regard to human rights, and compromises to propose, within a reasonable timeframe after consultation with the nation’s active forces, a timetable for a return to a constitutional order accepted by all.”

SOT, Sidsore Kader Ouedraogo, Army captain (French): “While inviting the population to go back to their business, the MPSR calls on patriots, Africans with integrity and all friends of Burkina Faso to support and accompany it in this decisive turning point in our country’s history. Today’s events mark a new era for Burkina Faso. They are an opportunity for all the people of Burkina Faso to heal their wounds, to rebuild their cohesion and to celebrate what has always made us who we are: integrity.”

The MPSR informs the national and international opinion that: 1. The constitution is suspended; 2. The government is dissolved; 3. The National Assembly is dissolved; 4. The land and air borders are closed from 24 January 2022 at 00:00 hours until further notice; 5. A curfew is instituted from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. throughout the national territory from this day until further notice. Ouagadougou on January 24th, 2022, signed by Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba, president of the Patriotic Movement for Safeguarding and Restoration (MPSR).”
