Story of a baby cow rescue - JD

You love to cuddle your mommy? JD, come. Good boy.

We rescued JD from a farm when he was about two days old. We were contacted about this little baby cow who potentially was blind, in not one but both eyes. He was standing in his own filth. He was chained to a wall with baling twine around his neck, pulled from his mom, within 24 hours of being born, unable to get the colostrum that he needed from his mom. They were just going to take him to slaughter.

With the help of friends, JD was transported to the Road To Refuge Animal Sanctuary. He was extremely, extremely malnourished. He could barely hold his own head up. We got him on some antibiotics and pain meds and he seemed to do a little bit better. We were hoping that he was starting to get out of the woods. But several days later, JD’s conditioned worsened again. He was rushed to the vet. What’s wrong buddy?

He was non-responsive, he wasn’t nursing, he was breathing really heavily. He had a fever. The vet thought that he might pass on his own throughout the night, but we weren’t ready to give up. I checked on him one last time around 3:00 AM. He was okay. He was stable. I woke up in the morning and he was standing up, he hadn’t done that in 24 hours. I was so, so happy. I’m pretty sure I cried. I was so, so happy.  And so after that,  He never really looked back. 

He just continued to improve and improve. He started to eat better. He was nursing and, he is doing so well. I’m so happy that we were the farmer’s choice and, they reached out to us instead of taking him to an auction and, he got a chance to thrive and now he’s living out his best life with all of his buddies.
