Speakers at the Human Rights Council Special Session on Afghanistan in Geneva on Tuesday discussed the ongoing humanitarian crisis and problems facing specific Afghan communities.

Delegates from around the world spoke about the importance of protecting those who are particularly at risk at this time.

“Millions fearing for their lives and a humanitarian crisis is unfolding as we speak. The people of Afghanistan in particular, the thousands of human rights defenders, journalists, academics, professionals, civil society members and former security personnel who were the backbone, and we hope still will be, of a contemporary and democratic society and whose lives and livelihoods are at risk,” stated Afghanistan Ambassador to the UN Nasir Ahmad Andisha.

Thousands of people have tried to flee Afghanistan since August 15 when Kabul fell to the Taliban, as Afghans fear reprisals and a return to authoritarian rule.

Kabul’s airport has seen days of chaos with people desperately trying to get inside the airport through Taliban checkpoints and board one of the Western evacuation flights.
