Football fans were seen gathering at Bafoussam Regional Hospital on Wednesday to receive COVID-19 vaccinations, after organisers of the African Cup of Nations announced that full inoculation against the virus would be required for all attendees.
Crowds of people descended upon the hospital ahead of the match, which gave COVID-19 vaccines in addition to tests.
Local resident Tekam Gaius stated that the vaccine would allow him to watch the football game in ‘peace’ without worrying about being infected or infecting others.
In December, the Confederation of African Football announced that attendees at the African Cup of Nations in Cameroons would need to be fully-vaccinated against COVID-19, in addition to having a negative test against the virus, to enter.
SOT, Ines, Local resident (French): “I was here to do the COVID-19 test because lately the disease is very widespread everywhere. And now that it’s negative I can have my ticket to go to the stadium to see the African Cup of Nations.”
SOT, Tekam Gaius, Local resident (French): “I have seen people affected by the disease, and with the new variant and what this implies I said to myself, why not protect myself and also my loved ones at the same time?”
SOT, Tekam Gaius, Local resident (French): “[I have also come for the COVID-19 test] because it will be an opportunity to be able to go to the stadium in peace without being afraid of contaminating or being contaminated.”
