Canada: Huawei CFO returns to Vancouver court for final phase of extradition proceeding

The long-running extradition process of Huawei CFO Meng Wan Zhou entered its final stage in Vancouver, Wednesday, almost three years after she was detained at the request of the United States on suspicion of financial irregularities.

Meng was seen arriving at the British Columbia Superior Court as her lawyers request the judge to decline the extradition request to the US.

“It is in everybody’s interest to make this go away. China does not need this, Canada does not need this, USA does not need this. It is harming trade, diplomacy, culture, sports, economic growth on all continents because of this geopolitical irritant,” stated immigration lawyer Richard Kurland, who has been closely following the case.

“We are not at the committal stage at this point in the process. That is when the court says yes or no, you are on the plane to the USA. Even then, appeals for six, seven years to the Supreme court of Canada is not going to make this case go away for this decade,” Kurland added.

Meng, who was arrested at Vancouver International Airport in December 2018 on a US warrant, is accused of misleading HSBC about Huawei’s business dealings in Iran.

The case has chilled diplomatic relations between China and Canada.
