Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau welcomed freed Canadian citizens Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig at Calgary airport on Saturday.

Spavor and Kovrig had been held as prisoners by Chinese authorities since 2018 following accusations of espionage.

The return of the Canadian citizens coincides with the release of Meng Wanzhoul, an executive of Chinese telecoms giant Huawei.

Meng had been serving as Huawei’s chief financial officer when she was detained in Canada on the basis of a US arrest warrant in 2018.

An agreement was reached on the charges made against Meng with US prosecutors on Friday, allowing for the Huawei executive to return to China.

Spavor and Kovrig were released by Chinese authorities on the same day as the verdict on Meng’s legal status came through, allowing for the Canadian nationals to board a plane back to their home country on Friday.
