CEO hails removal of Xiaomi from US sanctions lists, announces phone with under-display camera

CEO of leading smartphone maker Xiaomi, Lei Jun, hailed the company’s removal from a US government blacklist, during Xiaomi’s Autumn 2021 New Product Launch in Beijing on Tuesday.

US authorities added the Chinese electronics giant to the Department of Defense Communist Chinese Military Companies (CCMC) sanctions list earlier in January.

“Because we were a public company listed overseas, our information was highly transparent, and we firmly believed that we were not a military-related company”, explained Lei.

“Therefore, we immediately issued an announcement that Xiaomi was not a military enterprise and firmly opposed the unreasonable sanctions imposed by the US Department of Defense”, he added.

A US judge sided with Xiaomi earlier in March after the company launched a legal challenge in February, securing a temporary ban removal from the Trump-era list.

On May 25, Xiaomi became formally removed from the sanctions list altogether.

“Under the influence of Xiaomi’s victory, several Chinese companies later successfully sued the US government, so this is an unprecedented success”, said Lei.

As part of the event, Xiaomi’s Lei unveiled the latest Xiaomi MIX 4 smartphone which features an innovative ‘Camera Under Panel’ (CUP) display, which allows for the device’s front camera to remain neatly hidden beneath the display.

The device will available in mainland China on August 16 from a starting price of ¥4999 (€658, $ 771).
