Over 300 children took part in a ‘carruchas’ or wooden cart race in Caracas on Saturday morning.
The race was organized by ‘Carruchas El Retiro,’ a non-profit organisation that tries to preserve traditional games of Venezuela.

The children collected their painted wooden carts before walking to the top of a large nearby hill, where they took turns setting off and racing to the bottom.

“I played here, I participated. And if I win, good, and if not, at least I participated and had fun,” said a participant named Alejandro Carvajal.

One of the race organisers, Wilfredo Alvarado, stressed the social value of the game.

“The children are locked up in their houses. They do not share. They don’t know how to work in a team. And it is important that we now get this back. We are sowing values, principles in our community,” said Alvarado.

‘Carruchas’ racing is a traditional street game in Venezuela, with the children racing on Saturday marking ten years of preserving the game.
