Chile: Activists celebrate as lawmakers take step towards decriminalising abortion

Chile’s lower house of Congress passed a motion to debate a bill that would decriminalise abortion up to 14 weeks of gestation, Valparaiso, on Tuesday.
The motion, passed with 75 votes in favour, 68 against and 2 abstentions in the Chamber of Deputies, is seen as a first step to decriminalise abortion in the country. To move forward, the bill will be reviewed by the chamber’s Commission for Women before being voted on and, if approved, will move up to the Senate.
The vote was held on International Safe Abortion Day, with pro-choice protests held across Chile and worldwide.
The motion, which was entered in Congress in 2018 by progressive opposition deputies, seeks to modify the current abortion law, in force since 2017, which only allow pregnancies to be terminated only in cases of rape, when the life of the mother is at risk, or when the fetus suffers from a lethal congenital or genetic disease.

SOT, Karon Cariola, Deputy of the Communist Party (Spanish): “First to say that without a doubt it is a great advance and we are very happy that sanity has prevailed because it makes no sense to criminalise women who decide to abort for reasons other than the three causes (rape, infertility of the fetus or risk of the mother) this is a reality that we live every day and as my colleagues said a moment ago, unfortunately the conditions in which these women abort are absolutely risky conditions, that is the reason why we decided to carry out this project.”

SOT, Chiara Barchiesi, Republican Party member (Spanish): “In Chile we respect the lives of all people from conception to natural death without any arbitrary discrimination so today we are outside the congress to tell the parliamentarians that in Chile we want both of them Let’s save both lives, we are tired of the politicians who dedicate themselves to voting thinking about the votes, we must defend the principles and the lives of all Chileans.”
