After a session that lasted 15 hours, Socialist party deputy Rene Naranjo began his speech in the National Congress in Valparaiso on Tuesday as Congress approved an impeachment trial against Chile’s president Sebastian Pinera.

With a speech that was 1,300 pages long and among other speakers, Naranjo managed to extend his speech until midnight, allowing the arrival in Congress of deputies still serving their quarantine. He did this with the aim of getting more votes for the impeachment of Pinera.

“It must be understood quickly that what I am doing is for the people whose human rights have been violated, and those were left unpunished in the previous constitutional accusation. This is a gesture so that our country once and for all does not accept that we have a president who lacks integrity and for that reason one is prepared to make any sacrifice so that our country can live a true democracy,” stated Naranjo.

After the vote of the deputies during the session in the national congress, the constitutional accusation against the president was approved with 78 votes in favour, which means that the chamber will commence an impeachment trial against the president.

“It is the Senate that has to decide before Chile, before the Chilean people, the constitutional responsibility of Sebastian Pinera, which today by 78 votes we have confirmed in the chamber of deputies. Sebastian Pinera ​has been accused by the Chamber of Deputies of seriously violating the constitution, particularly in matters of probity, in matters of environmental protection,” said Marcelo Diaz, deputy of the Socialist Party as he confirmed the impeachment proceedings.
