Hundreds of supporters of left-wing candidate Gabriel Boric rallied in his support in Santiago on Sunday, following the first round of presidential elections.
“It won’t be the first time that we start from behind. We did it when we fought for education, we did it when we broke the binomial, we did it for the signature gathering and for the primaries, and I have no doubt that we will do it for the second round, and with unity,” said Boric.
According to the official results published by the Electoral Service, with 99.56 percent of the polls scrutinised, the Conservative-leaning Jose Antonio Kast achieved first place with 27.91 percent of the votes, followed by Boric, who achieved 25.81 percent of the votes.
In third place is Franco Parisi, from the People’s Party, followed by Sebastian Sichel, member of Chile Podemos Mas, who had the support of the current president Sebastian Pinera.
The second round of the presidential elections in Chile will take place on December 19, after no candidate achieved enough votes to proclaim themselves as the winner in the first round.
SOUNDBITES:
SOT, Gabriel Boric, Presidential candidate (Spanish): “It won’t be the first time that we start from behind. We did it when we fought for education, we did it when we broke the binomial, we did it for the signature gathering and for the primaries, and I have no doubt that we will do it for the second round, and with unity.”
SOT, Gabriel Boric, Presidential candidate (Spanish): “We are the opposition to this bad government of Sebastian Pinera and we are going to defend the principles that we have defended over the years, which are justice, equality and dignity. We will not forget that they declared war on us, we are going to declare hope”.
SOT, Resident (Spanish): “Without any doubts with a right-wind candidate such as Kast is proof that populism is gaining ground in Latin America, Bolsonaro’s populism, Argentinian populism, the populism that exists in Colombia, Ecuador, Uruguay. This is why it is very important that on the second round the popular force of the left demonstrates that it will not happen in Chile and we will win in December and we will establish a popular democratic government that listens to the people and makes the necessary changes to make possible that Chilean people leaves behind its misery, indignity that was before.”
