The major competition venues for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, including the National Ski Jumping Centre, the National Winter Biathlon Centre, and the Winter Olympic Village, have finished construction in Zhangjiakou, as seen on Wednesday.

The remarkable National Ski Jumping Centre, also known as Snow Ruyi, could be seen overlooking a large ski track, with a football field-sized viewing area at the bottom large enough to fit 10,000 spectators.

“[The centre] looks like the traditional Chinese decorative object, ruyi, which stands for Lucky in Chinese culture,” said Director of Zhangjiakou Olympics Construction and Development Ltd Jia Maoting, explaining the meaning behind the name. “It also shows the well-wishes from China to peace lovers across the world, sports practitioners and the forces driving the Olympics.”

Lu Zhanyou, Director of the Media Operation Centre of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, also noted how the park incorporated and renovated existing structures in its design, in an effort to consider its sustainability, with plans to convert the park into a hotel and ski-resort after serving its Olympic purpose.

The games are due to run between February 4 and February 20 in 2022.

SOT, Jia Maoting, Director of Zhangjiakou Olympics Construction and Development Ltd (Mandarin): “The most distinguishing features of the Guyangshu competition venue are the Snow Ruyi and Ice Jade Ring. The Snow Ruiyi is the National Ski Jumping Centre. It looks like the traditional Chinese decorative object, ruyi, which stands for ‘lucky’ in Chinese culture. It also shows the well-wishes from China to peace lovers across the world, sports practitioners and the forces driving the Olympics.”

SOT, Jia Maoting, Director of Zhangjiakou Olympics Construction and Development Ltd (Mandarin): “The Ice Jade Ring is actually the route that connects the three main competition venues. In the past Winter Olympics, the competition venues were usually far from each others. But in Zhangjiakou, they are separate but well-knit. The route connect the competition venues. During the 2022 Winter Olympics, people can walk on the route while the vehicles can cross underground. It includes wheelchair accessibility and there is a lift in each unit.”

SOT, Lu Zhanyou, Director of Media Operation Centre of 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics (Mandarin): “From the seven competition venues of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, Genting skiing park is the only one that has renovated upon existing facilities. When we designed the competition venues, we considered the sustainability and the long-term operation of the skiing park after the games.”

SOT, Wang Hao, Architect from Architectural Design and Research Institute of Tsinghua University Co. Ltd (Mandarin): “The indoor decoration in the room in the Olympics should be simple. After the Winter Olympics, it will become a ski resort and also a hotel for summer vacations. The mountains in Chongli are nice, the air quality is good, and the scenery is beautiful in both summer and winter. We think people need a relaxing and quiet atmosphere after skiing, so the colours inside all of the rooms will be fairly light, so as not to be too stimulating.”
