Large crowds of visitors could be seen entering, buying food and drinks, riding the carousel and having fun at the Asian largest beer festival, that kicked off in Qingdao, Shandong province on Friday.

It is the biggest Asian festival of this kind and one of China’s largest tourist attractions.

The festival attracts and offers different contents, including tourism, culture, sports, economy and trade.

The Qingdao International Beer Festival has been taking place since 1991. The festival is jointly sponsored by relevant ministries and commissions of the state and Qingdao.

SOT, Xie Wei Yang, Festival visitor (Mandarin): “I think the first day will be a bit more lively, there will certainly be more activities and performances in the opening ceremony than usual. So I came over to see it on the first day.”

SOT, Xie Wei Yang, Festival visitor (Mandarin): “Because, Qingdao itself is a tourist city, there’s a lot to eat and a lot of fun things to do. The environment is also quite nice, because it is coastal, cooler, so we come here with our friends to drink, to avoid the heat, and to take part in the beer festival. Anyway, I really like it here.”

SOT, Xie Wei Yang, Festival visitor Mandarin): “It feels no different from before, the only difference is to go to the supermarket you need to scan the code. Now I think 80 percent of people are vaccinated, so it’s safer and more relaxed.”

SOT, Xie Wei Yang, Festival visitor(Mandarin): “There is no difference, but now people have a little more awareness of protection, everyone did not pay attention to wearing masks before, but now they have this habit.”

SOT, Han Yan, Festival visitor (Mandarin): “This year there are a lot more people than last year. It’s more lively, there are more people, and the festival activities and programme are also a lot more lively. I came here mainly because it’s Friday and I didn’t have any plans for after work, so I wanted to eat and drink with my friends. It turned out they’d all already eaten, so we came to have fun at the beer festival.”

SOT, Han Yan, Festival visitor (Mandarin): “Life after the pandemic isn’t much different to life before the pandemic. I work and then play at the weekend, that’s continued. Although I feel like my mentality is better after the pandemic, life is more hopeful. Fun things are also more enjoyable, I’m living life one day at a time.”
