Beijing’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian criticised the recent trilateral defence agreement between Australia, USA and the UK, named Aukus, on Thursday.
In his speech, Lijian said that “The cooperation between the United States, Britain, and Australia on nuclear submarines seriously undermine regional peace and stability, intensifies the arms race, and undermines international nuclear non-proliferation efforts. The export of highly sensitive nuclear submarine technology to Australia by the United States and Britain proves that it is miraculously irresponsible that they use nuclear exports as a tool of the geopolitical game and adopt double standards.”
Lijian also urged the international community to “question Australia’s sincerity in abiding by its non-proliferation commitments.”
The comments come as Australia announced an Indo-Pacific security partnership with the US and UK that will enable it to acquire nuclear-powered submarines to counter China’s influence in the region. The Australian government said that it would take around 18 months to fully decide on the details of the agreement moving forward.
SOT, Zhao Lijian, Chinese MOFA Spokesperson (Mandarin): “The cooperation between the United States, Britain, and Australia on nuclear submarines seriously undermine regional peace and stability, intensifies the arms race, and undermines international nuclear non-proliferation efforts. The export of highly sensitive nuclear submarine technology to Australia by the United States and Britain proves that it is miraculously irresponsible that they use nuclear exports as a tool of the geopolitical game and adopt double standards.”
SOT, Zhao Lijian, Chinese MOFA Spokesperson (Mandarin): “As a non-nuclear-weapon State party to the Treaty on the non-Proliferation of Nuclear weapons and a party to the South Pacific Nuclear-weapon-Free Zone Treaty, Australia introduces nuclear submarine technology of strategic military value. The international community, including neighboring countries, has reason to question Australia’s sincerity in abiding by its non-proliferation commitments.”
SOT, Zhao Lijian, Chinese MOFA Spokesperson (Mandarin): “China will closely follow the relevant developments. China has always believed that any regional mechanism should conform to the trend of peace and development of the times and help enhance mutual trust and cooperation among countries in the region. Closed and exclusive coterie or small groups should not be established against third parties or harm the interests of third parties. This goes against the trend of the times, runs counter to regional countries’ aspirations, and is unpopular.”
