Travel within and from Zhengzhou was restricted on Wednesday amid a new COVID-19 outbreak in Henan’s provincial capital.

Only a few travellers could be seen at the city’s East Rail Station, after 75 new cases were reported as of Monday.

The government has instituted city-wide coronavirus testing in a bid to control the outbreak, while travel links to Beijing have been suspended.

Zhengzhou is still recovering from July’s deadly flooding that killed over 300 people in Henan province and impacted millions.

Most of the new cases were reportedly traced back to the Sixth Hospital, a designated hospital for treatment of overseas arrivals who are infected with COVID-19. As of Wednesday, well over nine million city residents were reportedly tested for the virus already.

China is dealing with its largest coronavirus outbreak in months as the Delta variant spreads, with at least 90 new cases confirmed on Monday, with 98 on Sunday, according to the country’s National Health Commission. The government has responded with local lockdowns and mass testing in affected cities, while also suspending transport links in a bid to hinder transmission.
