A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson expressed concerns over the current developments in the Solomon Islands during a press conference on Thursday held in Beijing.
“China pays close attention to the current developments in the Solomon Islands and supports the efforts of the Solomon Islands government to stop the riots. It is believed that under the leadership of Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare, the Government of Solomon Islands will be able to restore social order and stability as soon as possible,” said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian.
Violent riots shook the capital of the Solomon Islands on Thursday for the second day in a row, amid growing tensions related to historical inter-island rivalry, COVID-19 measures and dissatisfaction in Malaita, the most populous of the Pacific Island nation, over the government’s decision to switch political adherence to Beijing from Taipei, Taiwan.
The Australian government announced it would send forces to control the situation, as requested by Solomon Islands Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavore.
The spokesperson also pointed out the importance of a strategic partnership between China and Germany in hopes that the new German government will continue its ‘pragmatic’ policy toward China.
“It is hoped that the new German government will continue to abide by this policy, respect China’s core interests, and safeguard the political foundation of bilateral relations,” added Zhao.
China also criticized the US for putting 12 more Chinese firms on a trade blacklist.
“China reserves the right to take necessary counter-measures against the US side and will take all necessary measures to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese enterprises resolutely.”
