Cleanup efforts continued in the town of Mihe on Sunday, after Henan Province had been hit by a deadly flood that killed at least 63 people.

Volunteers and emergency workers were seen hauling off debris and damaged belongings, as well as using cranes to remove the rubble.

“It was flooding for two days and two nights. When the three major floods came, the town leaders took us to patrol the river for safety reasons because we are in a mountain torrent zone, where outbreak can easily happen. Then the next morning the communication was cut off, the roads were interrupted, the national highways were all smashed, and all the houses, property, and factory buildings were destroyed,” said Mihe village committee member Zhao Liting.

Two rivers overflowed in Mihe destroying large amounts of the infrastructure leaving its residents without power, water supply and mobile connection.

“About 200 people were dispatched to Henan [from Xiamen rescue team], which is now the most important disaster area. Currently we are in the state of disaster relief. Today we brought 50 sets of generators. We are going to install them in all the towns and villages in the hardest-hit areas to provide a basic power supply guarantee,” said founder of the Xiamen ‘Shuguang’ rescue team, Wang Gang.

Hundreds of thousands of people have been affected by the floods and its aftermath across the province with homes, infrastructure and farmland severely affected.

SOT, Zhao Liting, Mihe village committee member (Mandarin): “Our Mihe township was affected by flood. It was flooding two days and two nights. When the three major floods came, the town leaders took us to patrol the river for safety reasons because we are in a mountain torrent zone, where outbreak can easily happen. Then the next morning the communication was cut off, the roads were interrupted, the national highways were all smashed, and all the houses, property, and factory buildings were destroyed.”

SOT, Wang Gang, Xiamen ‘Shuguang’ rescue team founder (Mandarin): “About 200 people were dispatched to Henan, which is now the most important disaster area. We are here now in addition to these first-line rescue missions and currently we are in the state of disaster relief. The catastrophe has caused life difficulties for the masses. Very positive is that there’s a kind of love throughout the country which provides materials to help people on the scene. For example, today we brought 50 sets of generators. We are going to install them in all the towns and villages in the hardest-hit areas to provide a basic power supply guarantee.”

SOT, Wang Gang, Xiamen ‘Shuguang’ rescue team founder (Mandarin): “After the flood, especially in the towns and villages in the hardest-hit areas, everyone feels very desperate, many people were trapped, you could see it everywhere. How can you get from the vehicles floating on the water? We think it’s a very serious situation, people feel especially desperate without any basic living conditions.”
