China: Dutch speed skater Ireen Wuest makes history with five Olympic golds

Dutch Olympic speed skater Ireen Wuest gave a press conference in Beijing on Monday after becoming the most decorated Olympian in speed skating history, following her victory lap in the 1,500m race.

“[I was too nervous to watch] because I know Miho [Takagi] really is a really great skater, especially on the 1,500. So I was too nervous to watch,” Wuest said regarding her opponent, who picked up the silver medal.

Despite stating that she was ‘really happy’ to reconsolidate her position as an Olympic champion, Wuest announced her intention to quit from the sport, citing her desire to have children in the future.

“I’m really enjoying the journey, really enjoying my last year, but knowing that’s the last one, I’m enjoying it even more. So, it was a decision I made before this year. And I’m happy that I did. I’m happy that I can quit on my highest level,” said the skater.

Wuest won the race with a time of 1:53.28, picking up the fastest lap at 27.86.

The athlete has earnt 12 Olympic medals over the course of her career, surpassing all other Olympic speed skaters.
