China-Made COVID-19 Vaccine Begins Testing in Brazil

The city of Niterói in Rio de Janeiro has begun testing a coronavirus vaccine produced by the Chinese pharmaceutical company Sinovac.

9,000 volunteers are expected to participate across the country in total, including 800 of the city’s healthcare workers.

Brazil is the second worst-hit country in the world behind the United States.

President Bolsonaro has received criticism over frequently downplaying the severity of the virus.

No adverse effects were reported in Phase I and II of the clinical trials, with the vaccine reportedly reportedly trigging neutralising antibodies 14 days following the injection.

The latin American country is a prime location to test the new drug, researchers can get results faster by testing vaccines where active virus spread is rampant.
