China: Roads flooded as torrential rain batters Zhengzhou

Torrential rain lead roads to flood in Zhengzhou, in central China’s Henan Province, on Tuesday.

Residents could be seen trying to walk and drive cars through the at times knee-high waters.

Sixteen large and medium reservoirs saw their water levels exceed critical thresholds following the rainstorm.

The heaviest rainfall was recorded about 130 kilometres (80.7 miles) south of Zhengzhou in the city of Pingdingshan where just over 400 millimetres (15.7 inches) of rain fell, according to Xinhua.

Elsewhere in the province, the severe flooding caused an explosion at an aluminium plant in the town of Gaocheng, after a nearby river burst its banks, sending floodwaters into the “high-temperature solution inside the plant’s alloy tank,” according to a statement by local authorities.
