A spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) condemned Thursday’s attacks in Kabul and urged the Taliban to demarcate themselves from all militant groups, during a press conference in Beijing, on Friday.

“China was shocked by the explosion near Kabul Airport that caused heavy casualties and strongly condemned it. This incident shows that the security situation in Afghanistan remains complex and severe. China hopes that relevant parties will take effective measures to ensure a smooth transition of the situation in Afghanistan as well as the personal safety of the Afghans and foreign citizens in Afghanistan,” said MOFA spokesperson Zhao Lijian.

Zhao went on to ask the Taliban to condemn the attacks and strive for peace in Afghanistan.
“The Afghan Taliban should earnestly fulfil their commitments, be sharply demarcated from all terrorist organisations, resolutely crack down on the Eastern Turkistan Islamic Movement, and remove obstacles for regional security, stability and development cooperation,” he said.

The MOFA spokesperson also clarified no Chinese nationals harmed in Thursday’s deadly attack.

SOT, Zhao Lijian, China MOFA Spokesperson (Mandarin): “China was shocked by the explosion near Kabul Airport that caused heavy casualties and strongly condemned it. This incident shows that the security situation in Afghanistan remains complex and severe. China hopes that relevant parties will take effective measures to ensure a smooth transition of the situation in Afghanistan as well as the personal safety of the Afghans and foreign citizens in Afghanistan.”

SOT, Zhao Lijian, China MOFA Spokesperson (Mandarin): “The China embassy in Afghanistan has not received any report of casualties of Chinese citizens. It has established contacts with a small number of Chinese citizens who have voluntarily stayed in Afghanistan, maintained close communication and provided necessary assistance, reminded them to strengthen security precautions, meanwhile requested relevant parties to take measures to ensure the safety of Chinese personnel.”

SOT, Zhao Lijian, China MOFA Spokesperson (Mandarin): “China condemns the terrorist attack in Afghanistan, and expresses its deep condolences and sympathy to the victims, their families and the injured. China firmly opposes and strongly condemns all forms of terrorism, and is willing to work with the international community to cope with the threat of terrorism and prevent Afghanistan from becoming a source of terrorism again.”

SOT, Zhao Lijian, China MOFA Spokesperson (Mandarin): “We have noticed that in the past 20 years or so, some terrorist organisations have gathered and developed in Afghanistan, posing a serious threat to international and regional peace and security, especially the Eastern Turkistan Islamic Movement, which is an international terrorist organisation listed by the UN Security Council. It poses a direct threat to China’s national and people’s security. The head of the Afghan Taliban has clearly stated that no force will be allowed to endanger China in Afghanistan territory. The Afghan Taliban should earnestly fulfil their commitments, be sharply demarcated from all terrorist organisations, resolutely crack down on the Eastern Turkistan Islamic Movement, and remove obstacles for regional security, stability and development cooperation.”
