A skilled diabolo master from Hebei province practiced his skills whilst balancing on inline skates, as seen in footage filmed on Friday in Baoding.
57-year-old Wang Changjiang showcased his mix of talents, which included balancing a spinning top on his head, as well as creating mesmerising patterns with a diabolo.
Wang had first tried his hand at the diabolo, a circus prop based on the traditional Chinese yo-yo, over twenty years ago during his time as a student.
“I already knew how to skate, and I thought that by combining diabolo and roller skating, I could combine Eastern and Western cultures,” said Wang.
Speaking about the skills needed to simultaneously skate and play diabolo, Wang said that balancing everything was the most difficult aspect as it required both ‘strength and technique.’

SOT, Wang Changjiang, Diabolo master (Mandarin): “I already knew how to skate, and I thought that by combining diabolo and roller skating, I could combine Eastern and Western cultures.”

SOT, Wang Changjiang, Diabolo master (Mandarin): “[Skating whilst playing diabolo] looks cool, right? By adding speed, it makes the activity more exciting, which is better than playing diabolo on its own.”

SOT, Wang Changjiang, Diabolo master (Mandarin): “Because there are diabolo lovers all over the country, I have traveled extensively across China and made a lot of friends as well.”

SOT, Wang Changjiang, Diabolo master (Mandarin): “Playing diabolo is very interesting. Once you have learnt one trick, you will have to study the next, which I think is very challenging, so I love to play it.”

SOT, Wang Changjiang, Diabolo master (Mandarin): “At the very beginning I watched other people do diabolo tricks but couldn’t figure out how to do them myself. Later on, after practicing, I learned and was very happy. Being able to do new tricks after studying them made me feel very accomplished.”

SOT, Wang Changjiang, Diabolo master (Mandarin): “The most difficult aspect [to skating whilst playing diabolo] is being able to balance. It requires strength and technique.”
