US Olympic figure skater Nathan Chen held a press conference in Beijing on Tuesday after setting a world record in the men’s short program, having scored 113.97 points for his performance during a competition in the 2022 Winter Games.

“Of course [in] 2018 the two short programs did not go well, so to be able to have another opportunity to try my best, and yes, overall very happy and just really honored and lucky to be here,” said Chen, in reference to his performance in the Winter Games of 2018.

Chen’s performance broke the previous record of 111.82, set in 2020 by the two-time Olympic defending champion from Japan, Yuzuru Hanyu.

SOT, Nathan Chen, American figure skater: “Of course [in] 2018 the two short programs did not go well, so to be able to have another opportunity to try my best, and yes overall very happy and just really honored and lucky to be here, and of course to be up here with these two amazing skaters, you know continue to push the sport forward and I’m really honored to be, you know just here being able to witness that as well.”
