President Xi Jinping has called for a multilateral approach to global economics, whilst reaffirming China’s commitment to opening up its economy, during the China International Import Expo (CIIE) opening ceremony in Shanghai on Thursday.
“Unilateralism and protective ideologies are on the rise, and economic globalisation is facing push-back,” state Xi, before warning that the world should pay ‘significant attention’ to these issues.
Xi went on to reassert China’s commitments to the World Trade Organisation, with this year marking its 20th anniversary since joining the organisation.
“China has comprehensively fulfilled its commitments to join the World Trade Organisation,” said Xi. He went on to mention that the country’s tariff level has dropped to 7.4 percent, 2.4 percent lower than what is required to join the organisation.
Regarding China’s future economic plans, Xi stressed the need for global cooperation in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
“China’s determination to open wider to the outside world at a high level will not change. The determination to share development opportunities with the world will not change,” said Xi.
The CIIE has been held annually since 2018, and will run from Wednesday until Friday.
SOT, Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China (Mandarin): “Nowadays, global changes over the past century and the current epidemic situation are intertwined. Unilateralism and protective ideologies are on the rise, and economic globalisation is facing push-back. Research shows that the world openness index has declined over the past decade, and the global consensus on openness has been weakened. These issues deserve significant attention.”
SOT, Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China (Mandarin): “Opening up is a distinct symbol of contemporary China, and this year marks the 20th anniversary of China’s accession to the World Trade Organisation. Over the past 20 years, China has comprehensively fulfilled its commitments to join the World Trade Organisation. China’s total tariff level has dropped from 15.3 percent to 7.4 percent, lower than the 9.8 percent commitment to join the organisation.”
SOT, Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China (Mandarin): “Since China joined the World Trade Organisation, China’s continuous expansion and opening-up has stimulated the surging spring tide of China’s development and activated a pool of spring water in the world’s economy. In the 20 years since China’s entry to the World Trade Organisation, China’s development and progress have been achieved by the Chinese people working hard and tenaciously under the strong leadership of the Communist Party of China. It is also the result of China’s initiative to strengthen international cooperation, to achieve mutually-beneficial results.”
SOT, Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China (Mandarin): “China’s determination to open wider to the outside world at a high level will not change. The determination to share development opportunities with the world will not change. The determination to promote economic globalisation in a more open, inclusive, balanced, and win-win direction will not change.”
SOT, Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China (Mandarin): “China will unswervingly uphold true multilateralism, and the multilateral trading system with the WTO at its core is the cornerstone of international trade. The current multilateral trading system faces many challenges. China supports the reform of the WTO in the right direction, the inclusive development of the multilateral trading system, and the legitimate rights and interests of developing members.”
SOT, Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China (Mandarin): “The haze of the COVID-19 epidemic is not over, and the road ahead for the recovery of the world economy is bumpy. People of all countries need to work together to overcome difficulties. China is willing to work with other countries to build an open-world economy and let the spring breeze warm the world.”
