China: Xi Jinping vows to fulfil Taiwan's "peaceful" reunification with China

Chinese President Xi Jinping vowed to fulfill a peaceful ‘reunification’ with Taiwan, speaking at an official celebration in Beijing on Saturday, marking the 110th anniversary of the revolution that overthrew China’s last imperial dynasty in 1911.

“The historical task of the complete reunification of the motherland must be fulfilled and will definitely be fulfilled!” Xi said.

Xi said the biggest obstacle to the reunification of China is the ‘Taiwan independence’ force.
“Those who forget their ancestors, betray the motherland, split the country have never come to a good end and are bound to be scorned by the people and judged by history,” Xi said.

Xi’s speech comes days after the Chinese government executed a record number of armed incursions into Taiwan’s air defence zone.

Since its split from mainland China in 1949, Taiwan considers itself an independent, self-governed state. Beijing, on the other hand, continues to claim it is a breakaway province.
