Yangzhao Village, one of China’s principal red lantern village, ushered in the peak season of lantern sales, as seen on Wednesday in Shanxi.

With more than 100 years experience in lantern making, the villagers rushed to make lanterns to supply the festival market by sewing fabric together and assembling the lanterns.

Yangzhao village contains more than 20 factories and 1,000 workers involved in creating its lanterns.

“Our village has been making lanterns since the Qing Dynasty, so we have a long history of lanterns making for hundreds of years now,” said Zhao Changqing, a local lantern factory owner.

The lanterns have changed from hard lanterns in the 1990s to foldable soft lanterns today, and their uses have also developed from simple lighting purpose to festival decoration.

“Now the lanterns are usually used as decorations during the weddings and Spring Festival. However, there is such a custom in Shaanxi Province that the uncles will send a pair of lanterns to his little nephew during the Spring Festival, which means to wish his nephew a safe, healthy and long life,” explained Zhao Changqing.

As a seasonal product, the peak of the lantern sales season comes ahead of the Spring Festival, which will take place this year on January 31.
