Colombia: Hundreds demand better working conditions for health workers in Bogota

Around 500 people from various trade unions marched from the National Park to the Plaza de Bolivar in Bogota on Wednesday.

The demonstrators held banners demanding better working conditions for the health sector and the approval of the National Strike Committee’s bills by the Congress of the Republic.

“This government refuses to dialogue, refuses to talk, refuses to agree,” lawyer for victims of the armed conflict in Colombia, Alirio Uribe, stated.

“It is incredible that since 2019 a large list of more than 100 points was presented by all the social and popular sectors of the country and was never heard, in the month of June 2020 in the midst of the pandemic a national emergency list was presented that has not been solved either. The mobilisation will continue until August 6, 2022, when the Duque government leaves,” he added.

A large number of police officers walked alongside the participants in the national march.

Some members of the Indigenous communities of the Wayuu people also participated in the march, demanding the defence of their territories and the protection of natural resources.

The national mobilisation march has been led by the Central Unitaria de Trabajadores (CUT) of Colombia, as well as the Colombian Federation of Educators (Fecode), which is demanding the realisation of the agreements reached with the national government.
