A spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Office (OHCHR), Ravina Shamdasani, stated on Monday in Geneva that the conviction of Myanmar’s state counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi after a sham trial would ‘only deepen the rejection of the military’s rule.’
Shamdasani explained that Aung San Suu Kyi’s conviction came just a day after security forces in Yangon mowed down protesters in a truck and then used live ammunition against unarmed, peaceful demonstrators, leaving some 175 people dead and about 10 thousand political prisoners.
Furthermore, Shamdasani said that the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, expressed concern that these ‘developments risk further exacerbating tensions and violence’ in Myanmar.
