Could Countries Have Secret Nuclear Weapons? It is extremely unlikely. The point of nukes is not to use them, it’s deterrence. Having secret nukes would serve no purpose. If you were a country that could benefit from nuclear weapons, then you likely fear an invasion and you’d want to stop that invasion. Nukes are also incredible bargaining pieces and it gives you prestige in the world. It’s also nearly impossible to develop them and test them in private. There is one factor that could force a country to keep their nukes pseudo-secret: Sanctions. The vast majority of countries in the world have signed the NPT. If they develop weapons, they’ll be in violation of that and subjected to international sanctions. However, this has been successfully maneuvered around before. Israel has nuclear weapons, has hidden them successfully and does not acknowledge them publicly - and as a result has managed to escape sanctions. But the world does know of their nukes, so they aren’t a secret.
