Facebook connects billions of people around the world but has recently been criticised for allowing misinformation and hateful content to be published on its platform without moderation.
It’s an allegation the founder, Mark Zuckerberg, strongly refutes. He has so far resisted pressure to enforce policies that appear to censor candidates, stating it’s not the firm’s role to arbitrate political discourse.
However, staff recently staged a virtual walkout at the company after Facebook executives refused to act on a post by Donald Trump which Twitter flagged as ‘inciting violence’.
The US President had responded to riots in Minneapolis with a social media post which included the phrase: ‘when the looting starts, the shooting starts’.
Zuckerberg has put measures in place to ensure the outcome isn’t delegitimised by candidates prematurely declaring results.
Some officials already predict the results of the election might not be known for several days after voting ends.
But some experts say the new Facebook rules don’t go far enough.
With a potentially toxic election just a few months away, we take a look at the impact social media will play in the 2020 US election and the impact it has on democracy.
