Covered in ants, porcupine shows up at wildlife center

Months ago, Sassy was not doing well. Covered in ants, the young porcupine showed up on the front porch of the Wild West Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Texas. Covered in ants. I mean, covered. She was very weak and also had a large injury. The center’s staffers immediately took her under their care. You don’t want to? Ok.

Considering that porcupines are unique in many aspects, looking after her presented some challenges. We are just winging it with what we know and how they act. Oh, oh, it’s ok. For instance, how do you wash a porcupine? The process was meticulous but her rescuers fell in love with her personality. Look at those gorgeous teeth. Sassy also underwent an antibiotic course for the treatment of her injury.

Now on the mend, she’s spending a lot of time in the facility’s outdoor enclosure and the staff is hopeful that she could be released back into the wild.
