Phylum – Arthropoda; Subphylum – Crustacea; Class – Malacostraca; Order – Decapoda

Deca means “ten” and pod means “foot”. Hence the term Decapoda describes these creatures as being ten-legged. In many cases one pair of these legs has pincers or claws, which the crabs use to catch and break down food, to defend themselves or to attract potential partners.

Marine crabs are found in habitats ranging from the shallows to deep water around the world. Their diet includes fish, other crustaceans, algae and urchins.

Crabs have a hard exoskeleton or shell which does not expand as the crab grows. Therefore crabs periodically undergo a process called moulting, whereby they shed the hard shell on their backs and on their legs and then grow a new and bigger shell.
