Sometimes science can play out like a crime scene investigation. Join the National Geographic Society From Shore to the Abyss Plastics Team as they investigate microplastic pollution from aboard the EV Nautilus. This international team of researchers are tracing microplastic movements using various sampling methodologies in and around the Hawaiian Islands.

Led by Rozalia Project Founder and National Geographic Explorer Rachael Miller, the team observing the distribution of microplastics and anthropogenic microfiber pollution found in the surface waters and air surrounding the Hawaiian Islands of Maui, Lana’i, and Hawai’i Island. This research will contribute important knowledge to protect these essential waters.
