The Pegasus spyware scandal involving the spying of activists, journalists and opponents around the world by an Israeli company is “completely unacceptable” if true, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said during a visit to Prague on Monday.

She insisted that free press is “one of the core values of the European Union”.

According to an investigation published Sunday by 17 media sources worldwide including Le Monde and The Guardian, the Pegasus software, developed by the Israeli company NSO Group, made it possible to spy on at least 180 journalists, 600 politicians as well as 85 rights activists and 65 business leaders since 2016.

The Israeli tech firm NSO Group, which created Pegasus, said it provided “authorised governments with technology that helps them combat terror and crime.”
