In the Kingdom of Tonga, acid rain is predicted after the volcanic eruption. A cloud of poisonous gases escaping from a volcano in the Kingdom of Tonga can cause acid rain throughout the state. The toxic liquid carries the risk of poisoning the drinking water, rain is harmful to the skin and eyes. Emergency services warn people against going outside during rainfall. According to the Tonga Geological Survey, the Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Hapaai volcano erupted on December 20, releasing ash and gases 18 km above sea level. No casualties or damage was reported, but dust and gas mix with water vapor in the atmosphere. Local residents were advised to disconnect the drainage systems from the rainwater storage tanks until the sky is completely free of gases. The previous eruption occurred in 2015, creating a new part of the island on the caldera.
