At least six attackers and three policemen were killed after armed rebels stormed into the city of Bukavu in the early hours of Wednesday, triggering fighting with the army and police.
Residents reported that gunfire could be heard in the town from around 1:45 am on Wednesday (23:45 GMT, Tuesday) and continued for hours. Streets were largely empty as residents avoided going outside.
Theo Kasi Ngwabije, Governor of South Kivu Province said, “Investigations are continuing to identify the perpetrators of this attack, they will be brought to justice.”
Dozens of rebel groups have been present in eastern Congo since the official end of the Second Congo War in 2003.

SOT, Amos Bisimwa, Resident of Bukavu (French): “This morning we woke up to the crackling of bullets. The population of Bukavu did not understand anything, because the bullets had been crackling since one o’clock in the morning. We did not know what it was about, but it was afterwards that we learned that the rebels had made an incursion into the city.”

SOT, Theo Kasi Ngwabije, Governor of South Kivu Province (French): “In these clashes, we killed 6 assailants, 4 wounded, 36 assailants captured who are in front of you. We recovered 14 weapons of war, and on our side, we lost 3 soldiers who died, two are from the army and 1 is from the police.”
