‘Derek Chauvin Trial: Minneapolis Police Officer in Court Over Death of George Floyd’

The trial of a former Minneapolis police officer charged in George Floyd’s death is underway.

Derek Chauvin is charged with three offences over the death of George Floyd in May 2020.

The former police officer was filmed kneeling on Floyd’s neck for about nine minutes.

The death of George Floyd sparked waves of outrage and activism across the globe.

Many will see this trial as a test of the US legal system’s handling of racial injustice.

President Joe Biden, along with many millions across the globe, will be watching closely.

Floyd’s family agreed to a $27 million civil settlement with the city of Minneapolis in March.

The trial is expected to finish by mid to late-April.

Three other officers (Alexander Keung, Thomas Lane and Tou Thao) are set to go on trial in August on aiding and abetting charges.
