Customers were seen lining up at a shopping centre in Tokyo on Saturday to try their luck at a new initiative from a Japanese airline, raffling flights for mystery destinations via sealed capsules at a vending machine. The idea was put in place by Peach Aviation.
The passengers-to-be first buy lottery-type tickets on the airline’s website. They then use that ticket to go to a flashing and ringing part arcade part vending machine that will dispense for them a capsule containing a slip of paper indicating their surprise destination.
“We’ve been talking about going on a trip for a long time, but we haven’t gone for about two years. I’m feeling a little bit more relaxed about COVID-19. I thought we’d like to go. That’s how I feel,” said one of the customers who won a destination Nishino.
“We thought of this project because we wanted to do something that would make people more excited about travelling, and I knew that there were many people during the COVID-19 pandemic who were having a hard time travelling at a time when everyone was holding back on many things,” stated Peach airlines manager Shuntaro Kosasa.

SOT, Ikeda, Customer (Japanese): “Actually, I like to travel alone, and when I saw that this lottery was on TV, I wanted to go to Hokkaido to see the Snow Festival, so I came here to try to win the Hokkaido flight.”
SOT, Onoda, Customer (Japanese): “I hadn’t been anywhere at all since COVID-19 spread, so I thought it would be a good opportunity to travel with my family.”
SOT, Shuntaro Kosasa, Manager at Peach (Japanese): “COVID-19 is gradually settling down, and many people are visiting here for the lottery. I think the timing is just right for people to start going out more and more, after all, they’ve been holding back on travel for so long. Anyway, I think that all the excitement of going out is packed in the capsule.”
SOT, Shuntaro Kosasa, Manager at Peach (Japanese): “Normally, you can think of places you want to go and make plans by yourself, but I think this kind of chance encounter can lead to many discoveries that you didn’t expect.”
