Janine Wissler, the top candidate of Germany’s Left Party ‘Die Linke’ brought a real inflatable rescue boat and life jackets outside the Ministry of Defence in Bonn on Tuesday, as part of her party’s campaign effort against the criminalisation of sea rescue by NGOs and civilians.
“Rescue at sea is actually a state task and that is really a disaster that so many people are drowning in the Mediterranean Sea,” said Wissler, adding, “Rescuing people from the Mediterranean Sea, rescuing people from drowning, must not be charged.”
The situation worsens as many refugees are forced to use alternative routes because the European governments have blocked entrances to their territories.
“This year, 1,400 [refugees] have drowned again, from what we know, but because of the fact that the civil sea rescue of Europe is blocked,” said Dariush Beigui, the captain of ‘Iuventa,’ a rescue ship which was stopped and seized by Italian authorities.
The Left Party candidate said she wanted to show solidarity and respect to civilians who voluntarily do the rescue work that, according to her, the European Union should be doing.

SOT, Janine Wissler, Candidate of DIE LINKE party (German): “Many people are on the flee, many people are trying to cross the Mediterranean with such boats, to come leave with us and that is also because of the European union civil sea rescue has been discontinued, many are now being done by the own people with which we show solidarity, and for whom we have great respect, of course if it is to save people from drowning must never be criminalised, but one can still be criminalised if tracked.”
SOT, Dariush Beigui, Iuventa’s Captain (German): “I have seen very often up to 150 people in this boats, I know that it only takes half an hour when such a boat capsizes and everyone drowns if we are late, I also experienced that and that, but this is not only in the centre of Mediterranean, so this year, 1,400 have drowned again, from what we know, but because of the fact that the civil sea rescue of Europe is blocked, but there are other escape routes for example the route through the Canary Islands, which is much stronger and much worse, because the Canary Islands are more difficult to find for the people who are in the boat, and again and again we found boats where 50 people who are starving and others in different stages. It is simply horror, this is the European border policy. But on the so-called Balkan route really bad things happen every day too where people are illegally brought back and exposed to the winter in the forest.”
SOT, Janine Wissler, Candidate of DIE LINKE party (German): ” Yes, we are here today from the Ministry of Defence with a refugee boat to protest against the fact that more and more water is being supplied to the world, that civil sea rescue is being blocked, we are of the opinion that we no longer need money for armaments, but we need money for a world - fair global economic order, and we need a humanitarian refugee policy and help for people in need.”
SOT, Janine Wissler, Candidate of DIE LINKE party (German): “Rescue at sea is actually a state task and that is really a disaster that so many people are drowning in the Mediterranean Sea, and what is even worse is that the people who try to save them and get them out of the water go to the sea rescue city thanks and be recognised and criminalised. Ships will then simply be confiscated. Huge problem. Rescuing people from the Mediterranean Sea, rescuing people from drowning must not be charged.”
