Story of dog rescue - Daryl

Daryl was dropped off in October of 2016 at our local animal shelter. Emaciated, unable to walk, and in pain. He was diverted from the shelter and sent to a vet, thanks to a local animal rescue program. After multiple tests with no clear cause and hope fading, one vet after another suggested he’d be put down.

Players for Pits, the rescue that took on his care tried one more vet who put him on supplements and antibiotics as a last-ditch effort to save him. And within 48 hours, he had made a complete turnaround. He was walking on his own and eating and proving to everyone that he was not only going to live, but he was going to thrive. At the time, I was going through my own difficulties and I started following the rescue just to escape life. 

I waited anxiously for updates and followed his story for months until I found myself in a position to adopt. I thought something must be seriously wrong with him though, because he was so handsome and had so many followers that I couldn’t imagine why he was still available. I finally just asked and before I knew it, we had a home visit and the deal was sealed. Despite my fears, nothing was wrong with him. His previous owners had fed him nothing but apples and rice, which had led him to be severely malnourished, and in the bad condition he was in when he arrive.

These days, he eats only the best food and has filled out maybe a little too nicely. He loves long walks in the city, cold dips in the lake and visiting all the local pet shops where he’s constantly told how handsome he is. Sometimes in rescue, people ask who rescued who, given how much he’s taught me, how much he makes me laugh and how much he’s changed my life, I think I know the answer.
