Dog with lifetime of trauma finally discovers human love

Shortcake was surrendered to Animal Control Philadelphia with signs of a lifetime of trauma. A dog like Shortcake wouldn’t have much of a chance at Animal Control. So luckily her rescue, New Leash on Life stepped in to save her. New Leash on Life is a rescue program that saves at-risk dogs from local shelters and pairs them with people experiencing incarceration. The dogs are then adopted and New Leash participants get jobs and learn skills to stay out of prison.

When Shortcake was pulled from Animal Control, she needed extensive medical treatment and New Leash on Life received an emergency medical grant so that they would be able to provide her with the care she needed so desperately. Everyone fell in love with her. Shortcake is now program ambassador. She even got to go to Jay-Z’s Made in America Music Festival. Shortcake was very excited to see Lizzo.

Shortcake came home with us in April 2019, just a month after we had lost our dog, Molly to lymphoma. We were not looking to adopt again just yet, but our cousin who adopted another dog from the same class sent us info about Shortcake. Shortcake was the last available dog in her class. And we fell in love instantly.

I mean, how could you resist her little wobble and that smile. We filled out an application and a week later she was home. Shortcake lives with her two fur sisters, Bella and Roxy. She enjoys snuggling on the couch with mom and dad yelling at us for attention, drinking from the toilet, taking walks in her stroller and sniffing around on the beach. Recently she had to have emergency surgery because she ruptured two desks in her spine and was suddenly paralyzed. She is slowly recovering and learning to walk again.

She’s scooting all around and her personality is starting to shine through again. Shortcake has helped us so much through the grief we experienced after losing Molly. And we will be forever grateful for her.
