Dozens of people have died in Canada amid a record-shattering heatwave.

Since Friday, police in Vancouver have responded to more than 130 sudden deaths.
Most were elderly people or had underlying health conditions.

Meteorologists are describing the unprecedented conditions as a “heat dome”.
The country broke its temperature record on Tuesday, when it reached 49.9C in Lytton, BC.

The UN has warned of an “exceptional and dangerous” heatwave that has scorched the Pacific Northwest.

The US north-west has also seen a number of fatalities after record-high temperatures.

According to experts, the increased frequency of extreme weather is expected to be caused by climate change.
