Dozens of Japanese people waited for their turn to buy ‘traditional’ Christmas fried chicken at the newly opened Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) mini drive-through shop in Kimitsu, in the Chiba Prefecture, on Friday.

The mini fast food, opened by the famous chain, aims to meet customer demand for self-service and delivery facilities.

KFC, which has been opening small shops in cramped spaces in train stations and commercial centres, has decided to expand its services by opening mini drive-thru shops to meet market demand for self-service orders.

Customers, who are constantly lining up to receive their orders, say that the home delivery service seems to be an advantage in times of COVID, as eating out is not allowed.

“We can’t eat outside, so I’m going to enjoy the day with my family. So, I came to buy Kentucky today, and I’m going to go back to the supermarket, buy some liquor, buy some cake, and enjoy the day,” shared Koajiro, one of the customers.

KFC is reportedly focusing on opening new outlets to capture demands for midday meals that have spiked especially after the beginning of the pandemic.
