DPR militia vows "corresponding response" if Ukraine's army engages in 'acts of aggression'

Deputy Head of the People’s Militia Department of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) Eduard Basurin stated that the command of the DPR People’s Militia was continuing to receive ‘reliable information’ about the preparation of the armed forces of Ukraine for active hostilities in the Donbass region, speaking at a briefing in Donetsk on Monday.

Basurin on Monday claimed that the DPR “have recorded the conduct in the Ukrainian armed formations located in the zone of the so-called ‘operation of the united forces’ of measures to prepare for the offensive.”

Despite the claims, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba during talks with US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken in Kiev on January 19, thanked Washington for its military-supply assistance and assured that Kiev was not planning “any offensive operations.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Kiev was “doing everything for a diplomatic solution” and “for peace to come to Ukraine,” speaking in a video statement addressed to the country’s citizens on January 19.

The United States have ordered their diplomats’ families in Kiev to leave the country amid heightening tensions on the Ukraine-Russia border on Monday. Kiev criticised the ‘premature’ withdrawal of the diplomats’ families. The decision has been described as precautionary, with no specific event reportedly occurring in the past 24 hours to have prompted the move.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitri Peskov said on Monday it’s the West that has been stirring tensions in Ukraine by supplying weapons to Kiev, amid claims of aggressive Russian intentions towards Ukraine. Peskov added that reported Kiev troop movements near the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics is “indicative of preparations for offensive action, a threat that now exists.”
