The annual Hajj pilgrimage has begun under dramatically different circumstances in Mecca this year.

Amid the Covid-19 pandemic, the event has been limited to a maximum of 10,000 people, down from a normal attendance number of more than 2 million.

Saudi Arabia has introduced strict measures to contain the spread of the virus, including a ban on overseas visitors and the enforcement of masks and social distancing.

For the first time in Saudi history, the Hajj will not be open to pilgrims from outside the country.

The pilgrimage is meant to cleanse the soul and, as one of the five Pillars of Islam, is required to be performed by all able-bodied Muslims at least once in their lifetime.
