Dreaming of a green Christmas – Argentine town uses recycled bottles for seasonal decorations

The Argentine town of Capiovi uses recycled materials to turn the whole town into a Christmas wonderland, as seen in footage filmed on Tuesday.

The entire town collects plastic bottles, aluminium bags, caps and other materials throughout the year, which otherwise would simply end up in the trash, and turns them into seasonal motifs and decorations including gift packages, Christmas trees and reindeer sleighs.

The tradition was started in 2009 when a group of locals decorated the parish of the town located about 120 kilometres (75 miles) north of Posadas and about 180 kilometres (112 miles) south of the Iguazu Falls with recycled materials. Soon the idea spread until the whole town was adorned with eco-friendly ornaments.

“When people really see the decorations, they are amazed, they are fascinated, first by the amount of decoration that there is, second by the quality of the decoration because the aesthetics of each decorative element is taken care of,” says organiser Nestor Ledesma.

Because of the high quality and the sheer amount of the ornaments, Capiovi has seen many visitors that came to see the green Christmas miracle before the pandemic, among them tourists from Europe.
